Art - Tarot & Tea

afternoon delight tea art tarot&tea temperance thoth

Hey, Moonbeams! Welcome back to Tarot & Tea with Jessika TuCrow. Arcata is shining with the beauty of spring today and I hope this message finds you all thriving. Our card for this week was pulled from Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Tarot. Card 14 of the Major Arcana is usually called Temperance but in this deck it is given the new name, Art. This card embodies the essence of alchemy. Finding balance in a union of opposites is the goal of the Art card. In order to do so, it is imperative that the components be combined in the proper way or else they might become volatile. Avoiding excess is always important in supporting our optimum health. Moderation is the key in bringing together opposing forces to find a middle ground. Through equilibrium, synthesis can be achieved.

The Moonrise blend I’ve picked out to reflect the Art card is Afternoon Delight. This tasty tisane demonstrates herbal alchemy as Chamomile, Cinnamon, Licorice and Peppermint are joined in equal parts to create a unique and tantalizing fusion. The merging of opposing flavors to create something distinctly delicious is a great representation of the Art card. If one of the ingredients in the blend were to be added in a greater amount than the others, it would throw off the balance and be less than ideal. The temperance exemplified in Afternoon Delight is what makes it one of our most popular blends!

This week’s featured deck is Aleister Crowley’s Thoth Deck. Certainly one of the most widely recognizable decks, the Thoth deck is considered a gold standard of Tarot. Mister Crowley, an infamous Victorian occultist, altered the format of the traditional Tarot in order to better reflect the systems of magic he incorporates. In fact, many modern decks are styled after this one and it has played a major role in the development of the Tarot as we know it today. Painted in the mid 20th century by Lady Freida Harris, the unique images on the cards were originally created as very large pieces and therefore possess an impressive amount of detail. The symbolism used in the Thoth Tarot stems from diverse sources including science, philosophy, and a wide range of spiritual traditions. Crowley describes the delicate nuances of meaning hidden within the deck in its accompanying book, the Book of Thoth.
