Our Maca Balls are a delicious superfood treat that were made with love here at Moonrise Herbs in the pre-COVID times.  As it, sadly, seems unlikely that we will be offering them again, we would like you all to have this wonderful recipe for your own. 

Read below for more info on the herbs included and you will find the recipe proper at the bottom of the post.

Maca (Lepidium meyeniiis) a hardy perennial plant cultivated high in the Andes Mountains, at altitudes from 8000 to 14,500 feet.  This energizing plant is referred to at Peruvian Ginseng (although it is not in the same family as Ginseng).  In Peruvian herbal medicine today, maca is reported to be used as an immunostimulant; for anemia, tuberculosis, menstrual disorders, menopause symptoms, sterility, and to enhance memory. Maca is also a wonderful source of natural vital nutrients.  A source of amino acids, B vitamins and minerals such as potassium and zinc, some nutritionists liken eating maca to taking a high-quality multi-vitamin.

 Goji or Lycii Berries (Lycium barbarum) are from a large genus (Lycium) in the Solanaceae (nightshade) family. These nourishing berries contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory carotenoids and flavonoids. Being good for inflammation complaints, as a chemo protective, supportive to the Liver, immune tonic, lowers blood sugar levels and can be a nutritive! Goji helps with so much…strengthen weak muscles and ligaments, improve male performance and infertility, a yin tonic, great for the eyes, and so much more!

Spirulina (Spirulina platensis) is a chlorophyll-rich algae. It is a concentrated source of nutrients, which can be used to supplement the diet. It contains vitamins A and E, vitamin B complex, and minerals. Spirulina contains 0.5- 2 micrograms of B-12 per gram.

 Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanii) comes from an evergreen brushy tree in the Laurel family.  It contains Vitamins A, E, K and trace amounts of Vitamin C.  It is a strong antioxidant and has been used for countless ailments over millenia.  Cinnamon can be used to relieve flatulence, diarrhea, and dysentery. It is also useful as an acute remedy to check nausea and vomiting. Cinnamon is specific for any form of mild gastric or intestinal hemorrhage. It can help to slow or stop bleeding for most forms of passive hemorrhage.

Cacao (Theobroma cacao) comes from a tropical evergreen native to Central & South America.  It is a known anti-oxidants but is also chock-full of minerals like potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese and more!  

Flax seed (Linum usitatissimum) is a calorie-dense herb from the Linaceae family.  It is an excellent source of essential fatty acids like ALA's and Omega-3's. Flax seeds provide antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory thus aiding in the ease and prevention of many conditions.  It is also rich in vitamins and minerals.

Maca Bliss Balls

Yields 25/batch

Dry Ingredients:
#732                Gelatinized Maca Powder       .25
#8212              Spirulina Powder                     .06
#8055              Cinnamon Powder                  .02
#8017              Bee Pollen                               .06

Mix these well with…

2 oz of dried/sweetened Cranberries and set aside.

Blend the following in a blender or food processer

(Best to blend in small batches and put Walnuts in last to avoid clumping)

#8133              Lycii/Goji Berries                    .125
#2991              Cacao Nibs                              .06
#8094              Flax Seed                                 .03
2oz Sunflower Seeds
2oz Pumpkin Seeds
2oz Walnuts (Pecans can be used as a replacement)

Stir all dry ingredients well before adding wet ingredients to ensure an even mixture.

Wet Ingredients:
1 cup               Honey
1 ¼                   Peanut Butter (Almond Butter can be used as a replacement)

Add all ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly.

Refrigerate for 1 hour then roll into balls

Roll in Shredded Coconut
