Herbs and Adaptogens for Stress & Anxiety - Herb Blurbs

Stress and anxiety are so prevalent in our society and not without reason, but there are some great techniques to help keep you in a place of balance! While there are many mental and emotional techniques that can help, for our Herb Blurb Wednesday, we’d love to share some formulas that may provide some relief and would love to hear from you about your favorites as well!

One good idea is to support your nervous system. Here is a nourishing blend from Rosemary Gladstar that is simple and effective:

Nourishing Nervine Blend

3 parts Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) – Gentle but highly effective.  Helps regulate neurotransmitters, reduces anxiety and tension, calms the central nervous system and my help lower blood pressure that’s elevated due to stress.

2 parts Milky Oats (Avena spp.) – Soothes irritated and inflamed nerve endings.  Aids in balancing depression and anxiety, low vitality, irritability, and urinary incontinence.

1 part Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) – Relaxes nervous system and stomach.  Strong anti-viral properties.  Wonderful nervine tonic that is generally calming, relaxing and anti-spasmodic.

If tincture is more your go-to modality, we love Herb Pharm’s Nervous System Tonic, available here:

It’s also beneficial to support our Adrenal system with adaptogenic herbs.  These gently energizing tonic herbs help our bodies regulate hormones more efficiently….particularly the stress hormone Cortisol.  Essentially, these two little endocrine glands sitting on our kidneys are what help our bodies achieve the goal of homeostasis.

Adapt and Enliven Blend

1 part Ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera) – Adaptogenic nervous system tonic.  Both energizing and calming, this modulating Ayurvedic herb promotes general well-being and stamina.  Also considered a sexual tonic for both men and women.

1 part Tulsi (Holy) Basil leaf (Ocimum tenuiflorum) – One of India’s most sacred plants.  Tulsi bolsters the immune system, helps regulate body temperature, promotes healthy circulation and heart function and much more!

1 part Skullcap leaf (Scutellaria lateriflora) – A versatile nervine herb, Skullcap has been used for many years in cases of headache, nervous tremor, stress, menstrual tension/cramps, insomnia, and nervous exhaustion.  It is specifically indicated for those with “overactive” brains…..the dreaded “monkey mind” that affects so many of us, particularly as we are trying to go to sleep!

½ part Eleuthro root (Eleutherococcus senticosus) – The original adaptogenic herb! Builds stamina, endurance and “helps produce a state of nonspecific resistance against an underlying imbalance, regardless of the specific nature of the stressor”*

Feel free to add other herbs to this blend that suit your specific needs, be they medicinal or flavor. Some thoughts: Mints, rose petals, chamomile, oats, lavender, schisandra, reishi, etc.

Of course, we also have some tincture formulas that work beautifully for adrenal health.  A couple of our favorites are:

Wishgarden’s Deep Stress Formula:

And HerbPharm’s AdrenaNourish blend:
